Rachel Newham – The Week of the Blog – Day 5

Well! I didn’t do very well! Only 3 days and forgot Day 4 – never mind, here it is now.

Today I just want to ask questions because I need advice about social media – I have decided its time to join the 21st century!

Having read 2 articles published on the a-n website – ‘Is blogging for me’ and ‘Why artists need a blog’ – and having tried to be more proactive with the DVA blog, I feel quite convinced that writing a blog is an extremely good idea, for all sorts of reasons – especially if new dialogues can be opened up and others help to challenge and encourage diverse practice.

I know there are ways to post blogs on multiple sites including your website and Facebook page (not that I have one) but I have no idea how it’s done – Can anyone help?

I’ve been told, at various times, that I should have a Facebook page and use Linkedin.

I’d like to know how many of you use these or whether any of you have an opinion about their value? Do any of you use other forms of internet networking that is worth exploring?

PLEASE HELP!

Rachel Newham- The week of the blog – Day 2

Today I’m going to try and publish my blog on the correct site first time!

Following on from thoughts about process v. product there has been the issue of ‘product’ being about ego.  I found this piece of writing (sorry, forgot to record the source) which I think sums it up rather well.  It’s called Ego v. Soul – interesting question – Am I about ego OR soul?  I would like to think a healthy mix of both.

Interrogating Landscapes 2

OK – This is it! This week I’m going to get a grip on blogging and post all those things I’ve been thinking about.

Today – PROCESS v. PRODUCT

Joining the interrogating group has made me think long and hard about this issue and, after hours of discussion and evaluation, I’ve drawn up my ‘Model for Artistic Endeavour’.  It may be a bit simplistic but it has changed quite a bit since its original outline.  I thought it would be interesting to see how other people would view it and alter it.

These are my key points:-

1.  Basically I see ‘product’ as any tangible manifestation born from mental or physical process.  A product could be no                          more than a line or a mark but has value if it based on a mental process.

2.  Products born from mental…

Rachel Newham _ Sketchbook

This time I decided to take a lead from the previous artist whose work was using white chalk on a black ground.  I looked at some chiaroscuro work past and present and started to explore different ways of using light on dark.  Because of time constraints I didn’t get very far – but while I was working ideas were coming to me for my next project so I’ll carry on with this in my own sketches.  Great! It’s really given me the kick I needed to get going!

Rachel Newham – Sketch Book

Although initially daunted I really enjoyed this process.  I didn’t limit my responses to the work of the previous artist, as I looked through I found myself drawn to particular drawings by each one that had gone before.  It might have been a look, a gesture, the tonal quality or quality of line that inspired me to use, adapt and create a new/different version of what I had seen or create something that just used a spark.

Last lot of drawing classes before Easter break so took the sketchbook along and joined in with life drawing at Sherborne and Weymouth. A drawing for the terrified and a Portrait class in Wyke along with teaching someone to draw one to one. Wanted to include some not so perfect shapes and a man would have been great but none around that week and too tired to go hunting for one!
